About the Opportunity Center of the Midpeninsula (OC)
The OC is actually five distinct and separate entities managed by three different organizations, all under one roof in a $24 million facility built by the Community Working Group. Together, these five offer an impressive list of services. The five components are:
- Affordable Housing in the form of 70 studio apartments, 18 1-2 bedroom family apartments, and one manager apartment. Rent ranges from $371 to $1,074, depending on income level and unit size. The building is 100% occupied with a waiting list of over 650 people with a one to three year wait for a unit. This part of the facility is managed by The Housing Authority of the County of Santa Clara. The apartments are located on floors two through five. There are separate elevators for singles and families, accessed from the left door of the OC.
- The Opportunity Services Center is a continuation and expansion of the Urban Ministry of Palo Alto's Drop-In Center (a motor home behind the Red Cross), which has been around for many years providing services -- light meals, a clothes closet, a mail address, bus passes, case management and emergency rent assistance -- to homeless and at risk individuals. The new center expands the hours from 8am-11:30am to 8am-4pm, adds new services, such as showers, laundry facilities, lockers, a classroom, and a state-of-the-art computer lab with high-speed Internet access. The OSC occupies the right side of the ground floor. This program is managed by InnVision's Urban Ministries division.
- The Family Opportunity Center is a new program -- also managed by InnVision -- that provides services to homeless and at-risk families. The Family OC offers the same services as the OSC, with additional services for families. The Family OC is located on the left side of the ground floor and accessed through the door on the left.
- The Clothes Closet is an existing program with a new home in the OC. In addition to distributing clothing, the program also helps the homeless by providing backpacks, jackets, sleeping bags, socks, underwear, shoes and toiletries. The Clothes Closet is located in the middle of ground floor and is accessible from both the OSC and the Family OC and administered by InnVision.
- The Opportunity Health Center provides a comprehensive range of health care services to the residents and unhoused clients of the Opportunity Center. OHP operates a licensed community clinic -- the Dr. Donald A. Barr Medical Center -- that offers primary care, mental health care, case management, and other supportive services to both adults and children. The OHC is located in the middle of ground floor and is accessible from both the OSC and the Family OC. It is managed by Opportunity Health Partners.
